How to Split a PDF Into Separate Files (Free, No Upload)

You've got a 60-page scanned bundle, but the person waiting on it only needs pages 10 through 14. Emailing the whole file is slow and overshares; you want just those pages as their own PDF. Here's how to split a PDF for free in your browser, without uploading anything.

Three ways to split — pick the one that fits

"Split" can mean three different jobs, and choosing the right one saves you cleanup:

1. Split by range — break one document into chunks. Use the PDF Split tool to cut a large file into parts (for example, every 10 pages, or a specific set of ranges) and download them as separate PDFs.
2. Extract specific pages — keep only the pages you want and leave the rest behind. PDF Extract Pages pulls, say, pages 10–14 into a fresh file while the original stays untouched.
3. Delete unwanted pages — keep most of the document but drop a few. PDF Delete Pages is faster than extracting when you only need to remove a blank scan or an internal note.

If you find yourself extracting most of a document, deleting the few bad pages is usually the quicker path — and vice versa.

Split by range, step by step

1. Open the PDF Split tool.
2. Load your PDF — pages render as thumbnails so you can see where to cut.
3. Set your split points (page ranges, or a fixed interval).
4. Click split and download the resulting files, often bundled as a ZIP.

Putting the pieces back

Split too finely, or want to recombine parts after editing? Join them again with PDF Merge. A common workflow is split → fix or remove pages → merge the keepers back into one clean file.

Troubleshooting

• The tool says my PDF is password-protected. Splitting can't read an encrypted file. Remove the protection first (you'll need the password), then split.
• A huge PDF freezes the tab. Rendering every page as a thumbnail is memory-hungry. Close other tabs; for a very large document, split it in halves first, then refine each half.
• I only need a few scattered pages, not a range. Ranges are awkward for pages like 3, 8, and 22. Use PDF Extract Pages and select exactly those, or PDF Delete Pages to remove everything else.
• The split files are almost as large as the original. Each page keeps its embedded images, so page count doesn't map neatly to file size — a few image-heavy pages can dominate. That's expected, not a failed split.
