About JPG to PNG

JPG to PNG re-encodes a JPEG into PNG, a lossless format. JPEG throws away detail to stay small, and every re-save adds more artifacts; PNG stores pixels exactly, so once converted the image won't degrade further as you edit and re-export it. The conversion can't recover detail JPEG already discarded, and because PNG is lossless the file usually gets noticeably larger. PNG also supports transparency, which makes it the right target when you plan to cut out a background or layer the image.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload a JPG image.
  2. Click Convert to PNG.
  3. Download the PNG file.

Examples

Convert a photo to PNG
Input
photo.jpg · 420 KB · lossy JPEG
Output
photo.png · ~2.1 MB · lossless

Identical pixels and dimensions, but PNG is lossless so the file is several times larger.

Tips & gotchas

  • PNG is lossless, so the file almost always grows compared to the JPG — that is expected, not an error.
  • Converting can't undo JPEG damage already baked in; existing compression artifacts carry over into the PNG.
  • Use PNG for screenshots, logos, line art, and anything you'll edit; keep JPG (or WebP) for photos you just need to display small.
  • If you need transparency, convert to PNG first, then erase the background — JPG can't hold an alpha channel.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?+

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it's the right choice when you'll edit the image repeatedly or need crisp edges without compression artifacts building up.

Will the PNG be larger than my JPG?+

Almost always, yes. PNG stores every pixel exactly while JPG discards detail to stay small, so for photos PNG can be several times larger. That's the cost of lossless quality.

Will converting improve the image quality?+

No. Conversion can't recover detail JPEG already removed; any existing artifacts remain. It only prevents new loss from future saves.

Does the converted PNG have a transparent background?+

Not automatically — the JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG is fully opaque. PNG supports transparency, so you can erase the background after converting.
